Tura, Aug 25: The 1st Meghalaya Khelo India Pencak Silat Women’s League successfully concluded on August 24 at the Dakkopgre Community Hall in Tura, West Garo Hills.

This was the first ASMITA Women’s Pencak Silat League organised at Tura under the Khelo India initiative of the Government of India.

The two-day event, which began on August 23, was organised by The Meghalaya Pencak Silat Association in association with The Indian Pencak Silat Association, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Government of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

Over 50 participants competed for gold across various weight categories.

Speaking to Hub News, Elbiston Marak, president and founder of the Meghalaya Pencak Silat Associations, said, “We will be selecting whoever wins the gold or is the best for the National level”.

The Khelo India Scheme, a nationwide initiative, seeks to invigorate sports engagement across the nation, empowering individuals through the holistic benefits of sports, which include child and youth development, community enrichment, social integration, gender equality, healthy lifestyle promotion, national pride, and economic opportunities within the realm of sports.

The ASMITA Women’s League, previously known as the Khelo India Women’s League, underscores the government’s resolute commitment to fostering gender equality and nurturing active women’s engagement in the realm of sports. ASMITA stands for “Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action,” that captures the determination, resilience, and accomplishments that define women athletes across the country. This not only brings a fresh identity but also embodies the aspirations of countless women who aim to excel in the sporting arena.

Though the exactly origin of Pencak Silat is unclear but it is widely understood to be a form of Indonesian martial arts. Pencak Silat is a multi-disciplinary Martial Art that involves striking, grappling, and throwing in addition to wielding of weapons. This Martial Art is characterised by close quarter fighting. Practitioners of Pencak Silat aim for maximum agility and speed to overwhelm their opponents through quick and efficient pressure point strikes.
