Tura, Jan 16: East Garo Hills police have placed under suspension an armed branch sub inspector and a driver involved in the road accident at Songsak on Thursday morning when the convoy of state home minister Lakhmen Rymbui hit a motorcyclist leading to his death at Khera village of Songsak.
East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Bruno A Sangma has placed under suspension ABSI Kromith Marak and driver constable Dimsrang N Sangma whose vehicle collided with the motorcyclist leading to loss of life.
Biker Joakim Marak (45 years) of Dimit Rongtatgittim area of Dobu village of east Garo Hills was killed on the spot while his pillion rider survived with injuries.
The police gypsy driven by Dimsrang was at the tail end of the convoy when it dashed directly at the motorbike.
The incident took place at Kera, on the Songsak road not far from Williamnagar town at 1:30 in the afternoon.
Home minister Lakhmen Rymbui was in his official vehicle and part of the convoy coming from Shillong through the Nongstoin-Williamnagar-Tura highway for a review meeting with superintendents of police from Garo Hills.
One of the pilot police gypsy vehicles belonging to East Garo Hills District Executive force (DEF) escorting the home minister at the back of the convoy rammed straight on with the motorcyclist who was going from Williamnagar side towards Songsak.
The collision was at high speed killing the biker and leaving the pillion rider grievously injured and admitted to Williamnagar civil hospital.
“The accident took place at high speed and it seems the biker was on the wrong side as his motorcycle crossed the middle divider mark of the road and veered towards the other side” informed East Garo Hills SP Bruno A Sangma.
A medical done on the police driver came with a clean chit and a post mortem has been conducted on the deceased.
“Immediate assistance to the family of the victim is being provided and necessary action will follow depending on the police report enquiry. We have already registered a case,” informed Superintendent of Police Bruno A Sangma.
