Imphal, May 06: After the heavy deployment of the army, the security situation in Manipur’s Churachandpur, KPI, Moreh and Kakching has been brought under control.

“As a result of proactive and timely response, Churachandpur, KPI, Moreh and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday (Thursday) night,” the Spear Corps stated in a press release.

“13000 civilians have been rescued so far and are staying in adhoc arrangements within military premises,” it stated.

The Army also informed that in the “past 12 hours (Friday morning to evening), Imphal East and West districts (in Manipur) witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish blockade”.

Union Home minister Amit Shah has been monitoring the situation in Manipur.

Shah reportedly chaired at least two meetings with Manipur chief minister N.Biren Singh and senior officials of the state via video conferencing and reviewed the law-and-order situation.

Meanwhile, additional central forces have reportedly been dispatched to Manipur to avert further escalation of tensions in the state.
