AASU leader lynched in Jorhat, Assam CM assures strict action against culprits

Guwahati, Nov 30: A 23-year-old All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader was killed and a local journalist and youth were injured when an unruly mob attacked them in Assam’s Jorhat town on Monday.

The deceased AASU leader has been identified as Animesh Bhuyan.

Sources said the incident reportedly took place after a man was injured in a road accident.

A video of a mob attacking AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan and journalist Mridusmanta Baruah has surfaced on social media.

The deceased AASU leader is a resident of Dergaon in Golaghat district while journalist Baruah works for a private TV news channel.

Meanwhile, Jorhat police have arrested three people in connection with the incident thus far.

“We are examining the video footage of the incident to identify the culprits involved in the incident. We have arrested three people so far and further investigating is underway. We will arrest everyone involved in the incident, none will be allowed to go scoot free,” a police officer said.

The AASU has demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the incident.

AASU general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah said, “We are giving 24 hours to the police to nab those involved in the killing. If police fails, then AASU will take action.”

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured strict action against the culprits involved in the lynching of a young leader of the All Assam Students’ Union.

Sarma said, “Those involved in the incident will be booked and justice will be served.”
