Guwahat, May 16 : Reeky Sarma, an actor with nearly two decades of experience in the media, made debut with an Assamese feature film “Jiya.” In an exclusive interview with Hub News, Sarma shared his excitement and experiences about his first major role in Assamese cinema.

“I have been working in the media for the last 17-18 years, mostly playing short roles. But this is my first time acting in an Assamese feature film,” Sarma revealed. “Sharmistha, an old friend with whom I started my journey in the same media, wrote a script and asked me to play the lead role. After two years of hard work, the film is finally releasing tomorrow in theatres across Assam. I hope everyone will watch the film. We have promoted ‘Jiya’ all over Assam, and people are already talking about it.”

“Jiya,” directed by Kenny Basumatary, is set for release in Assam on May 17. The film is notable for being Basumatary’s first “serious, but not boring” project. Written and produced by Sharmistha Chakravorty, “Jiya” tells the story of a resilient young woman named Jiya, portrayed by Chakravorty herself.

The film has already received acclaim, winning the Best Film award at the Prag Cine Awards this year, along with awards for Best Screenplay and Dialogue (Kenny Basumatary & Sharmistha Chakravorty), Best Singer Male (Angarag Papon Mahanta), and Best Background Score (Ambar Das).

“Jiya” delves into the life of its titular character, who escapes an abusive marriage and navigates the challenges of single motherhood alongside her young daughter, Nupur (Aradhya Mahanta). Amid her struggles, Jiya finds a steadfast friend and guide in Pallavi (Eepsita Hazarika), who helps her rebuild her life. Leaving behind a toxic job, Jiya finds solace in Pallavi’s workplace, where she meets the courteous Abhi (Ricky Sarma). The film explores how Jiya’s life unfolds as she overcomes her hardships.

As Sarma steps into his new role as Abhi, he hopes his performance resonates with audiences and adds depth to the already compelling narrative of “Jiya.”
