Shillong, Jan 28: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum on Friday called upon Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to apprise the lack of proper drainage system and sanitation facilities at Police Reserve, HQ, Shillong.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nongrum informed that due to lack of proper drainage and sanitation systems at Police Reserve quarter is a very long pending issue and it has caused disruption and create inconveniences to the residents staying in the quarters and nearby houses which fall under Dorbar Shnong Wahingdoh bordering Police Reserve Headquarter, Jail Road, Shillong for many years especially during monsoon seasons.

“The water logging that surrounds the area within Reserve Police has led to the massive collapse of fencing wall that secures the area in the recent months. While another portion of the land has led to a landslide which unfortunately claimed the lives of two innocent persons,” said Nongrum.

Nongrum futher added that amidst the time, when the Government is stressing on ‘Proper Sanitation, Green and Clean’ surroundings, the situation in Reserve Police, on the contrary, has witnessed health hazards, foul smell emanating from unclean, muddy, human waste scattered all over the surface due to lack of proper sanitation and drainage systems.

Unfortunately, the water that accumulates at the Reserve Police flows down to the nearby locality of Wahingdoh. However, part of the building meant for staff quarters in Reserve Police has been vacated and left unused as there are fears that it may collapse any moment and portion of the fencing wall bordering the said area is in a dilapidated condition that may lead to major unpredictable disaster.

The North Shillong MLA futher informed that a joint inspection was conducted on 14.12.21 between the local MLA in the presence of Dangsan Khyriem, DSP incharge of Police Reserve Headquarter and the Dorbar Shnong Wahingdoh.
