Shillong, May 16: Social Activist Angela Rangad on Monday logged a complaint to the Chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta regarding the shoddy construction of the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong, East Khasi Hills district.

Just after few weeks of it becoming operational, heavy downpour in the city has exposed the shoddy construction of the Rs. 48 crore project.

In the complaint, Angela stated that the ISBT, which is less than a year old, has developed major cracks and has been leaking, pointing to shoddy construction which can be due to lackadaisical superintendence of the construction by the Public Servants of State PWD over the contractors and construction agencies of the project or the failure of the Transport Department to examine the structural integrity of the construction before the handing over of the project.

She also alleged of corrupt practices by the contractors/construction company in executing this public infrastructure project and conflict of interests in execution of the project.

Speaking to media persons, Rangad termed this as a waste of public money and the public cannot accept this. “It is something the public cannot accept because it is the public money that has gone to waste,” she said and opined that the construction of the ISBT should be subject to further scrutiny.

Angela Rangad also wrote to the Chairperson regarding the Asset Declaration and Asset Register of Public Servants of Meghalaya as mandated by the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014. She stated that Section 45 of the Act clearly mentions about the fact that Public Servants should declared their assets annually.

“Through the declaration of assets, we can understand if there are disproportionate assets among our public servants,” she said.
