Imphal, June 21: The Manipur government formed Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) for the indentification of illegal immigrants.

The CSC has found that around 2187 illegal immigrants have taken shelter in the violence hit Manipur.

All the illegal immigrants have taken shelter in the northeastern state following the military Junta taking over in Myanmar.

According to the state government the recent violence in Manipur was fuelled by influential illegal poppy cultivators and drug lords from Myanmar settling in Manipur.

According to reports, Tengnoupal had 1147 illegal immigrants, Chandel had 881, Churachandpur 154 immigrants, Kamjong 5.

“With the unrest in Myanmar due to the coup and outbreak of civil war, there has been a large scale influx of immigrants from Myanmar to the border villages on the Indian side.

This is further exacerbated by the porous border along the Indo-Myanmar border. In view of this alarming situation on national security, the Manipur Government had formed a Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) on Identification of Illegal Immigrants headed by minister Letpao Haokip and other members include minister Awangbow Newmai & minister Thounaojam Basanta,” an official said.

The official added, “Manipur Government’s War on Drugs campaign have badly affected the poppy cultivation and narcotics drug business run by Myanmaris in Manipur. Due to the above-mentioned reason, the recent violence in Manipur was fuelled by influential illegal poppy cultivators and drug lords from Myanmar settling in Manipur”.

The devastating ethnic violence, which so far killed over 120 people and injured more than 400, began in Manipur on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised by a tribal student body in the hill districts of the state to protest against the Meitei community’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) status demand.
