Itanagar, Dec 23: People have started to visit Nyanjang Chhu in Tawang’s Zemithang valley, following the arrival of majestic black necked cranes at the valley.
Zemithang valley is a village and the headquarters of an eponymous circle in the Twang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
“The seasonal migratory birds from Sino-Tibetan plateau, generally visit the place in riddance of extreme winter, seeking for favourable habitats, and Nyamjang Chhu, one of the wintering sites at Zemithang, under Tawang district, and Sangti valley in West Kameng district are the two wintering sites in India,” said a local resident.
Pemba Tsering Romo, a field assist of WWF India, said, “The arrival of the birds has brought joy among us, we need to ensure their safe stay here, as they are our precious guests. These cranes are highly revered by the Monpas as the embodiment of sixth Dalai Lama, and envisage auspicious sign.”
Meanwhile, to ensure safe and undisturbed stay of these majestic cranes, Zemithang EAC Deewan Mara has issued an order prohibiting quarries and crushers’ activities nearby the habitats for 20 days.
The order has also warned of penalty of Rs 10,000 or legal action, if the order is violated.
The black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) is a medium-sized crane in Asia that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau and remote parts of India and Bhutan. It is 139 cm (55 inch) long with a 235 cm (92.5 inches) wingspan, and it weighs around 5.5 kg (12 lb).
