Itanagar, June 21: A severe diarrhoea outbreak in Konsa, a remote village near the Indo-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district, has claimed the lives of two children and left at least 19 others ill.
The deceased children are Khunwang Wangsa (5) and Sahwang Wangsa (7). Konsa village is around 50 kms from the district headquarters.
The incident has raised concerns about public health and sanitation in the region, prompting local health officials to take action.
According to Dr. Aza Miyu, who recently joined as the District Medical Officer of Longding, two children have died so far, while 19 others are under treatment, three of them are admitted at the Longding District Hospital. “Possible contamination of drinking water sources in the village might be the reason for the outbreak of the disease,” Miyu said.
The DMO Longding further informed that teams have been sent to the village to treat those affected by the disease, and the health department is also initiating necessary steps to create awareness of diarrhoea and how to prevent its spread.
Meanwhile, locals allege that although the disease was reported on June 15 with the death of one child, the health department officials reached the village only on June 18, which, according to the villagers, further aggravated the situation.
