Assam: 1 killed, several injured after water supply pipe bursts in Guwahati

Guwahati, May 25: A woman was killed after a Gammon JICA water supply main line pipe burst in the Kharguli area of Guwahati on Thursday at around 3 pm.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sumitra Rabha.

According to reports, the burst caused a massive water gush that swept away several vehicles and damaged at least 40 houses.

Over 600 people were affected and around 30 persons have been injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the injured were rushed to the nearby hospitals for treatment. The police have cordoned off the area and are investigating the cause of the burst.

According to locals, the burst took place when valves were opened for testing of water supply through the newly laid pipes.

The burst resulted in thousand litres of water gushing out of the leaked section of the pipe at brute force.

The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has assured that the water supply will be restored soon.

The affected people have expressed anger over the incident. They have demanded compensation from the GMDA for the damage caused to their property.
