Assam: Absconding son surrenders before police in Margherita rape & murder case

Guwahati, May 8: The absconding son of the main accused in sensational Margherita rape and murder case surrendered before the Assam police on Monday.

According to police, the son of the accused in Margherita rape and murder case, Anan Tanti, was reported to be absconding since May 3.

Tinsukia police had earlier arrested Anan Tanti and his wife in connection with the rape and murder of a minor girl in Margherita.

Anan Tanti, the prime accused in the case, was arrested by the police from Namsang tea estate near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

His wife Ganga Tanti was arrested by the Assam police for allegedly misleading the investigation and concealing evidence.

According to police, the couple was arrested after recovery of the body of the deceased from a septic tank at Jayanagar under Margherita sub-division in Tinsukia district of Assam.

Anan Tanti also sustained bullet injury in his leg after police opened fire as he tried to escape from custody. He was admitted at Assam Medical College and Hospital for treatment in Dibrugarh.

Police said Anan Tanti has been booked under section 201, 302, 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 6 of the POCSO act.

According to police, the rape and murder victim who was a class 6 student had gone with her mother to watch a Bihu cultural programme in the area on the night of May 1.

“The trial of the case will be done in a fast-track court. We will submit the chargesheet within one month. The accused has been booked under section 302 (murder), 376 (rape), 376 DA (gang rape of women under 16 years of age) and section 6 of the POCSO Act (aggravated penetrative sexual assault). We will ensure that the victim gets justice,” said Margherita SDPO.
