Assam, Nov 11: As many as five newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) legislators, who had won the Assam byelection held in five assembly seats on October 30, were sworn in as the members of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
In a brief programme, Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary administered the oath to BJP MLAs Phanidhar Talukdar, Rupjyoti Kurmi, and Sushanta Borgohain, and ruling alliance United People’s Party Liberal’s (UPPL) Jiron Basumatary and Jolen Daimary.
Notably, BJP’s Sushanta Borgohain won the Thowra assembly constituency and BJP candidate Phanidhar Talukdar won the Bhabanipur seat while Rupjyoti Kurmi won the Mariani seat.
BJP’s ally UPPL candidate Jiron Basumatary and Jolen Daimary won the Gossaigaon and Tamulpur respectively.
The bye-elections were necessitated after BPF MLA of Gossaigaon and UPPL MLA of Tamulpur constituency died due to post Covid-19 complications and the MLAs of Thowra, Mariani and Bhabanipur switched to BJP.
BJP and its ally UPPL had won all five seats in the Assam By-polls.
