Boko, 06 June: The Assam Forest Department celebrated the state-level World Environment Day on Wednesday evening at Luki Reserve Forest under Singra Range in Boko. Senior officials graced the occasion, especially Spl Chief Secretary (Forest) Mr. MK Yadava and Principal Chief Conservator of Forest & Hoff R.P Singh.
Talking to reporters, D.F.O. Kamrup (West) Division Dimpi Bora said, “Keeping in mind the theme of this year’s World Environment Day’, ‘land Restoration, desertification and Drought Resilience,’ we are privileged to have planted 689 saplings in 0.74 ha of barren, degraded land from 30 different species like Xilikha, Teteli, Koroi, Bogi Poma, Kanchan, Sal, Teak, Arjun, Ejar etc.”
Jawaharlal Nehru College Principal Tapan Dutta, Members of Pub-palahpara J.F.M.C. (Joint Forest Management Committee), School Children, Villagers of Forest Fringe Villages, Saraighat Bikers Association were part of this massive plantation drive.” Through this massive plantation, the Forest Department Assam, in general, and Kamrup West Division, in particular, tried to convey the importance of planting trees to safeguard the environment and sustainable development.
When asked about the earlier schemes under “Van Mahotsav” in 2010, thousands of saplings were planted in the presence of the Assam Former CM, Late Tarun Gogoi, but not all the saplings survived. However, the Spl Chief Secretary(Forest), Mr. MK Yadava, gave assurance that “the present D.F.O. Dimpy Bora is doing everything to save and care for all the saplings which are planted today.”
In addition, A cafeteria Named “Apurugiya Cafeteria” was inaugurated by Spl Chief Secretary(Forest), which will function under Kamrup West Forest Division and run by female Pub-Palahpara J.F.M.C members. This Cafeteria is conceptualized with a proper profit-sharing model. Located at the Existing Apurugiya Brikhya Park, the Apurugiya cafeteria will be a proven mechanism for the empowerment of fringe communities where women from villages will be engaged in functioning the Cafeteria wherein the public can enjoy several facilities like One Stop Tea point, micro library, free training on nursery and plantation, etc. The inauguration of the said Cafeteria will usher in a new era in the empowerment of forest fringe communities, reducing dependency on the forests, effective use of the J.F.M.C. concept, and finally, protecting the environment.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from D.F.O. Kamrup West, Dimpi Bora I.F.S., to the Guests present.
