Assam: Guv Kataria and CM Sarma lead 10th International Yoga Day celebrations

Guwahati, June 21: Assam marked the 10th International Yoga Day, themed “Yoga for Self and Society”, with a series of events across the state on Friday. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma observed the event in Guwahati and Tezpur, respectively.

Governor Kataria, accompanied by state finance minister Ajanta Neog, was the chief guest at the International Yoga Day event at Tarun Ram Phukn Indoor Stadium in Guwahati. The event was organized by the Kamrup (Metro) district administration.

Many senior citizens, government officials, and sportspersons, including women and children, performed Yoga at the event.

Talking to the media, Governor Kataria hailed PM Narendra Modi for leading the international Yoga Day celebrations in Jammu & Kashmir, saying, “He has popularised Yoga globally. The Prime Minister of the country gave a message to the world through this Yoga Day. Today, on the occasion of World Yoga Day, India is proud that we have adopted this teaching.”

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was present as Chief Guest at Nehru Maidan, Tezpur in Sonitpur district of Assam.

Transport and Excise Minister Keshav Mahanta, Urban Planning and Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal, MLAs Prithviraj Rava, Ganesh Limbu, and Krishna Kamal Tati, and Chief Secretary Ravi Kota attended the event.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of yoga and meditation for a happy and healthy life and urged parents to introduce their children to yoga at an early age. He stressed that this practice would contribute significantly to their mental and physical well-being.

The Chief Minister highlighted the long-term benefits of incorporating yoga into daily routines, especially for the younger generation, saying, “Yoga promotes holistic development and builds a strong foundation for a balanced lifestyle.”

Apart from state ministers and senior administrative officials, the GOC of Army IV, Air Force, and SSB chiefs, officers, and soldiers of the Air Force, Army, Central Reserve Forces, SSB, etc., participated in the Central Yoga Day on Friday.
