Agartala, July 30: A team of Assam Police conducted a surprise raid in a village in Sidhai Mohanpur, West Tripura district, leading to the arrest of two individuals, including a Bangladeshi national. The raid was conducted in connection with a case registered in Assam related to Rohingya infiltration.
Only a day ago Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had expressed concerns just a day before about Assam being used as a “corridor” by Rohingya infiltrators to reach Delhi or Kashmir. He also alleged that some brokers in Tripura were facilitating this infiltration. In line with his remarks, the Assam Police took action and made the arrests.
During the operation at Boalia para village, Assam Police Additional Superintendent of Police, Bidyut Saikia, who led the team, discovered nine Aadhar cards, several PAN cards, and Bangladeshi documents in the possession of one Kajal Sarkar, whose residence was raided.
Sarkar was subsequently arrested, along with Bishnu Chandra Mandal, the Bangladeshi national found at his home.
As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether the Assam Police will seek transit remand for the arrestees.
The recent arrests highlight the seriousness with which the issue of Rohingya infiltration is being addressed in the region.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had urged the Assam Police not to limit their efforts to deporting Rohingyas from Assam but also to take action against the brokers operating in Tripura.
This is not the first instance of such arrests related to Rohingya infiltration in Tripura. On July 19 this year, a Tripura youth was arrested from Belonia in South Tripura district for charges of human trafficking and trafficking Rohingya refugees into Indian soil via Tripura.
Additionally, just a month prior, fourteen individuals, including seven Bangladeshis, four Rohingyas (including two infants), and three Indian touts, were arrested in Kailasahar, Unakoti district, a town along the Indo-Bangla border.
According to a report by the Border Security Force (BSF), a total of 369 people were arrested in various operations in Tripura in 2022. This number included 59 Rohingyas, 160 Indians, and 150 Bangladeshi nationals.
The figures were higher than the previous year, where 208 ‘intruders’ were arrested in 2021 while attempting to cross the Indo-Bangla international border in different parts of Tripura, including 115 Indian nationals and 93 Bangladeshi citizens.
Tripura’s geographical location, surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides and sharing an 856-km-long international border, poses challenges in terms of border fencing due to local disputes and demarcation-related issues.
The recent actions by the Assam Police demonstrate a growing concern over illegal infiltration and human trafficking in the region.
