Assam: Rajdhani Express mows down elephant and its calf

Guwahati, Oct 11: In an tragic incident, a mother elephant and her calf died after being hit by speeding Rajdhani Express near Titabar in Jorhat district of Assam.

According to official sources, the incident happened on Sunday night but the pachyderms died on Monday after being in agony and pain. Official sources said a herd of elephants was crossing the railway tracks on Sunday night, and that the female elephant was 22 years old and the calf was 10 months old.

The place where the incident took place is a known elephant corridor, forest department sources said, adding that the trains are supposed to exercise caution on these tracks. Forest department sources further stated that alert was issued to railways on the movement of elephant.

Railways is yet to make any official statement on the incident.
