Guwahati, Aug 9: Heavy exchange of fire between militants and security forces took place at two locations on the India-Myanmar border in the Northeast on Tuesday.

This comes days after militant groups in the region called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations.

The first incident took place near Pangsau Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. The government said in a statement that militants fired at Assam Rifles personnel from across the India-Myanmar Border early on Tuesday morning in the Tirap Changlang area.

Sources said the gunbattle took place around 4 am when the militants suddenly attacked the Assam Rifles camp. Rocket Propelled Grenade( RPG)  and Lathode bombs were used, Army sources added.

A JCO of 19 Assam Rifles has sustained injuries.

In retaliation, the Assam Rifles fired on them and a firefight broke out between them but no casualties has been reported, said a source.

Confirming the incident Changlang Superintendent of police, Mihin Gambo, said firing was reported from Pangsau pass area this morning. The underground group behind the attack could not be ascertained, as of now.

The second incident took place at remote Noklak district of Nagaland bordering Myanmar.

“The 2nd incident took place this morning at a border output of Assam Rifles in Noklak where suspected militants belonging from NSCN(KYA) and ULFA(I) opened fire near the output of Assam Rifles. Till now no reports of injuries or fatalities from the area, senior police officials have rushed to the spot,” said Sandeep Tamgadge, ADGP ( Law & Order), Nagaland Police.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched a massive operation near the Indo-Myanmar border.

Recently, Assam Rifles have launched massive operations against the insurgents groups in Tirap, Longding and Changlang region of Arunachal Pradesh and nabbed many NSCN (KYA) cadres.

Pangsu pass area is one of the remotest area in Arunachal Pradesh and shares boundary with Myanmar. Most of the insurgent groups of Northeast have set up their camps in the jungles of Myanmar and they very easily enter into Arunachal Pradesh through the jungle routes.
