Guwahati, April 29: The residents staged a protest and blockade of the National Highway near Doomdooma in eastern Assam Tinsukia, demanding compensation for the family members of Sanjeev Chetry, who was killed in a road accident on April 23.
The tragic incident occurred on April 23, when Sanjeev Chetry, while working at Sushil Agarwal’s tea factory, was struck by a tree branch during a windstorm, resulting in his death.
The Gorkha Students’ Union took part in the protest and demanded compensation for the deceased family.
“We demand compensation for the deceased family because Sanjeev Chetry was the only bread earner in his family. He was a worker at Sushil Agarwal’s tea factory. Today, we have blocked the National Highway, and if the demands are not met, then we will intensify the agitation,” said a member of the Gorkha Students’ Union.
He said, “After more than five days of the incident, the owner of the tea factory, Sushil Agarwal, did not extend condolences to Chetry’s family, causing outrage among locals,”.
Meanwhile, the Doomdooma Revenue Circle officer intervened and urged the protesters to lift the blockade. However, talks were adjourned amidst ongoing tensions.
