Assam suspends offline classes of VI to VIII students in districts with over 100 COVID-19 cases

Guwahati, April 26: After closing down schools for primary classes, the Assam government had on Monday announced that classes for students from VI to VIII will also remain closed in the districts that have more than 100 active Covid-19 cases.
A government notification to this effect has also been issued by the Elementary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Department of the state.

“As of now, Classes from VI to VIII will remain closed in districts with more than 100 active Covid-19 cases.” state’s Health and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told media at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Monday afternoon.

For the higher up classes, that is Class IX and X, and the higher secondary and college students, the educational institutes will only operate with 50 percent of students rendering them to attend classes on alternate days.

The state education department has authorized the district administration in all such districts to close down classes from VI to VIII in all government and private schools in view of the alarming rise in positive cases.

The state government had earlier issued orders to suspend regular classes in the elementary standards from the pre-primary level to class V in all districts with more than 100 Covid-19 cases.

Currently, the classes of the elementary standards in the majority of the schools are being conducted online.

The order issued by the education department has also asked the schools to take the necessary steps to conduct classes of VI to VII standards online.

Assam’s COVID-19 cases are rising alarmingly with a total of 1,844 people tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

There are currently 15,470 active cases in Assam, with the majority in Kamrup (Metro) district.
