Assam: Udalguri gang rape accused shot while fleeing police custody

Guwahati, June 25: In a dramatic turn of events, Hafizul Ali, one of the five accused of the gang rape of a minor girl in Assam’s Udalguri district, sustained bullet injuries when he allegedly tried to escape police custody on Monday night.

The incident occurred during police raids accompanied by the accused in Mazbat in Udalguri district under Bodoland Territorial Region (BRT). Following the incident, Hafizul was admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

According to reports, Mazbat police in Udalguri district arrested five youths for the alleged gang rape of a minor girl at Dhunsuri Tea Estate, under Mazbat Police Station in Udalguri, on June 22, 2024.

The five accused, identified as Mustaq Ahmed, Saddam Ali, Ehsan Ahmed, Mohidul Islam, and Hafizul Ali, were arrested following an FIR filed by the victim’s family members at Mazbat Police Station.

Meanwhile, during the investigation, police conducted raids with the accused on June 24 night. The accused, Hafizul Ali, tried to escape police custody by pushing two cops. In retaliation, police shot at the accused during the incident.

This was the third incident of a police encounter in 48 hrs in the State.

Earlier, Kenaram Basumatary, a dreaded dacoit, was injured in police firing following his attempt to escape police custody in Boko, Kamrup district bordering Meghalaya.

The second incident took place in the Cachar district, where police shot at a man who was accused of kidnapping a girl. The accused allegedly pushed a cop during the investigation and tried to flee.
