Assam: ‘Village Rockstar’ fame Rima Das gets Oscars invite to join Academy’s Class Of 2024

Guwahati, June 26: Rima Das, born and brought up in a small village in Assam, has once again brought laurels to the state and the northeast as she has received an official invitation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, better known as the Oscars, to be a member of the Class of 2024.

She was among 487 new members invited by the Oscars from across 57 countries, which includes 71 Oscar nominees, 19 winners and eight dual invitees.

Along with Rima, other Indian film personalities invited to join the academy this year include actor Shabana Azmi, directors SS Rajamouli and Anand Kumar Tucker, costume designer Rama Rajamouli, cinematographer Ravi Varman, Hemal Trivedi, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, choreographers Prem Rakshith and Sheetal Sharma, and documentary filmmaker Nisha Pahuja.

When asked about the invitation, she said, “It is like a dream come true.” Expressing that it was one of her dreams in life, she added, “My Oscar journey began with the nomination of Village Rockstar as India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2017. I thank God and people for their blessings.”

Reacting to the news, renowned Assamese actor Adil Hussain took to X and extended his congratulations, stating, “Big Congratulations Rima Das!! You are such an inspiration. Your contributions to Indian Cinema is example of the true meaning of Shilpa Shila+Alpa /Less is More. Best wishes.”

It is worth mentioning that Rima Das is a self-taught filmmaker hailing from Kalardiya village under Chhagaon Police Station in the Kamrup district of Assam. Despite no formal training in filmmaking, she has achieved various milestones in the industry, including the official entry of her film ‘Village Rockstar’ in 2017.
