Shillong, Aug 31: The body of the Awami League leader, Ishaque Ali Khan Panna, was handed over to an associate of the family early on Saturday morning at the Khliehriat Civil hospital in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.
The body will be taken to his home in Pirojpur district in Bangladesh through the Dawki Land Port in West Jaintia Hills.
The body was handed over to a close associate of Panna’s family, who has been authorised by the Bangladesh High Commission to identify the body and complete the necessary paper works, early morning at around 5 am by the officials of Eastern Jaintia Hills district. His body was immediately taken to the Dawki- Tamabil Integrated Check Post amid tight security cover.
Panna was a former General Secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and a key member of the Awami League.
The Ministry of External Affairs, India and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh have been working closely ever since the body of Panna, a high-profile political figure associated with former PM Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, was found in Meghalaya. The state government has been actively coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission as per the instructions of the Ministry of External Affairs and Home Affairs.
On Friday evening, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had stated that the state government was waiting for instructions from the Centre on the next step to be taken following the recovery of Panna’s body in a betel nut plantation in Dona Bhoi village in East Jaintia Hills on August 26. The body was identified through a Bangladesh passport.
Dona Bhoi area of East Jaiñtia Hills (EJH) District is about 1.5 kilometers from the Indo-Bangladesh border.
According to the post mortem report of Khliehriat Civil hospital, Panna was killed by throttling.
According to sources, several security agencies are investigating the circumstances that led to Panna’s death and the “dumping of the body” inside India.
