A news that will certainly bring smiles on the faces of thousands of Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) qualified teachers in the state, who are yet to be placed in a government school, is that the validity of their result has been extended for lifetime.

Earlier, the validity of those who have cleared MTET was 2 years. But a recent notification from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has extended the MTET qualification for life.

Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Tuesday informed that the notification from the Meghalaya government will also be issued by this week, so that candidates who have cleared the test won’t have to sit for the exams again.

Concerning the MTET examination, the Education Minister said the itinerary for the MTET exam was already published but due to the pandemic it was postponed. “Now with relaxations in place, in next week or ten days time the new notification will be issued to fix the dates for the exams,” he said.

He also informed that candidates who have cleared the MTET exams but did not clear the personal interview will have to reapply whenever there is a vacancy.

When asked about the demands of the All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association who were protesting at the Malki Ground in Shillong, Rymbui said that they have explored all possibilities but the standing norms, instructions, procedure that whoever is appointed into any position they have to undergo the process of recruitment as the case maybe.

The All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers’ Association demanded for a second opportunity to retain their jobs, as out of 1,100 applicants only 200 could clear the eligibility test. This puts the jobs of the remaining 900 contractual lower primary teachers at risk.

The MTET is a state level examination conducted by Directorate of Educational Research & Training, Shillong. The MTET exam is conducted to determine eligibility for teachers from Class 1 to 8 for the government schools of Meghalaya.
