BJP-Congress supporters detained by villagers for illegal campaigning at night

TURA, Feb 26: Villagers across Garo Hills have gone into vigilantism mode ahead of voting resulting in multiple seizures of political supporters out trying to woe or buy voters support in the Garo Hills.

On Sunday night, a gypsy with supporters of BJP candidate Benedic Marak of Raksamgre constituency was caught by villagers of Uringgre village attempting to enter the village to influence voters even though campaigning had ended on Saturday at 4 PM.

 

Angry villagers gherao the white gypsy vehicle and refused to allow it to escape until election officials arrived on the scene.

In another incident, naka checking by North Garo Hills police led to the dention of 12 people in a vehicle while they were carrying 3 lethal weapons in the form of daggers from Bajengdoba constituency.

According to sources, the detained persons were allegedly congress supporters who had hours earlier blocked the NPP candidate Pongseng Marak’s convoy.

The third incident was reported from Siju Rongara constituency of South Garo Hills where some elderly supporters of NPP candidate Rakkam A Sangma were roughed up by villagers for trying to enter a village to influence voters.

These incidents come a day after BJP supporters of candidate Akki A Sangma in Dalu were caught with Rs 1.74 lakh rupees from a village by vigilant villagers.
