Guwahati, June 16: In view of the unrest in the neighboring Jiribam district of Manipur, which shares its boundaries with Assam’s Cachar district, a crucial meeting was held between two top district police officials on Saturday evening.
The Numal Mahatta, superintendent of police, Cachar, and M Pradip Singha, his counterpart in Jiribam district, convened a special meeting at the Jirighat border and discussed measures to maintain peace in the border area.
Manipur is currently facing severe unrest due to ongoing communal clashes. The clashes in Jiribam have resulted in a highly volatile situation.
Over the past few days, several hundreds of people have taken refuge in the neighboring district of Cachar after their houses were blazed in the conflict.
During the meet, the district superintendents of police of the two states discussed strategies for maintaining peace.
Speaking to reporters, Jiribam Superintendent of Police M Pradip Singha said, “I am really happy to have Cachar SP Numal Mahatta with us. He discussed the issue with our police and like to thank Assam DGP GP Singh for personally speaking to me regarding the ongoing conflict. I think that it will make a lot of difference because Assam police is with Manipur police and they are ready to assist and cooperate for bringing peace in our region.”
“We look forward for future cooperation and believe that with time and cooperation of Assam police, especially in the border area and, we will see there will be peace on both sides of the border,” Singha said.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, “I am happy to meet the new SP of Jiribam. He is an old acquaintance. With cooperation, we are intensifying joint patrolling of the border areas. We are present round the clock to ensure the safety of the people in border areas, not just in Assam but also in Manipur.”
The meeting concluded with a strong resolve to work together to maintain peace and security in the bordering people.
