Capt Williamson Sangma, Meghalaya’s first CM, remembered on 33rd Death Anniversary in Garo Hills

Baghmara, Oct 25: Rich floral tributes have been paid to Meghalaya’s first chief minister Late Captain Williamson A Sangma on his 33rd death anniversary with a special program and a gun salute.

Education minister and local MLA of Rongara Siju Constituency Rakkam A Sangma, who also happens to be a relative of Captain Sangma, led the gathering in paying tributes to the pioneer of Meghalaya State at Capt Williamson Memorial Park in Baghmara which is also the constituency where Captain Sangma hailed from.

Dignitaries including Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police and other top officials of Baghmara paid floral tributes during the memorial service.

A similar programme to commemorate the death anniversary was also held at Siju Mondal gitok Playground in Siju which is the birth place of Captain Sangma.

During the Memorial Service Rakkam Sangma recalled the immense contribution of Lt Capt Sangma in the creation of Meghalaya as a separate state.

“He was a man of committed love and a vision who had no quest for fame or money” said Rakkam Sangma.

The minister suggested that stories on Lt Capt Sangma, particularly his various contributions towards the betterment of the State, could be compiled into a book or biography for people, particularly non garos, to understand the impact the leader had in the state and its people.

The minister suggested for the Literature Professor of Capt Williamson Government Memorial College initiate the project.

“Let his virtue of love towards it’s own country men reflect in each and everyone of you here,” said Rakkam Sangma.

Education minister Rakkam Sangma has said that further informed the students who have passed in top ten position in the state will be given free admission in any college or university.

Special packages are to also be given to those students who excel in science and mathematics subjects.

Artificial turf for Siju
Education minister Rakkam Sangma has announced that Siju, birth place of Captain Sangma, has been given sanction for establishment of an artificial turf with gallery seating for Siju Mondal Gitok Playground under Khelo India Scheme where people of the region will be able to utilize the infrastructure for sporting activity, particularly the youth.

To mark the day, in the memory of Lt Capt Williamson Sangma,the grand finale of an open to all football tournament was organised at Siju Mondal gitok Playground that saw contest between finalists Dorenggo versus Nokatgre team.

On the same occasion, appreciation certificates and cash awards were bestowed upon students of Siju region who had secured 1st Division with letter marks in the Class X SSLC examination 2023.

GHADC observes Capt. Sangma’s Death Anniversary 

Senior Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin of NPP led the gathering in paying floral tributes to Captain Sangma outside the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) office in Tura on the occasion of his 33rd death anniversary.

From the Council side, Deputy CEM Nikman Marak led the gathering in paying his respects.

Later, the congregation visited the grave of Captain Sangma, adjacent to his home in Tura, and laid floral wreaths.
