CEM decides to resign to end ongoing protests

Must read

Tura, Feb 25: GHADC CEM Rakesh A Sangma has decided to step down and a new leader is being selected to take over on Monday, according to MDCs from the ruling alliance.

The decision to resign is expected to end the three week long protests that have rocked Garo Hills.

Various pressure groups including the GSU, FKJGP and others launched protests after Rakesh A Sangma won the election to the CEM position ousting Benedic R Marak.

The protest groups have alleged that Rakesh never followed the Garo tribal way of life and took his mother title only before entering politics, a claim denied by his family.

The protests which began from office picketing of council office for a week went on to a bandh call and then escalated into protest rallies across different parts of Garo Hills.

The escalated protests reached a peak when protesters started shouting slogans and waving black flags against chief minister Conrad K Sangma on his latest visit to Garo Hills for various programmes.
