Shillong, May 19: Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) International from Chennai in partnership with Bethany Hospital has come up with the initiative to spread awareness on the serious issue of neurodegenerative disorder.

The Clinical Lead – Dept. of Interventional Neurology & Neuromodulation MIOT, Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan informed that the MIOT hospital at Chennai offers treatment called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for neurodegenerative disorder — Alzheimer or dementia, parkinson or strokes and the treatment will soon be available in Meghalaya as the hospital has tied-up with Bethany Hospital Shillong.

“There are various means of medications for minor neurodegenerative disorder but for those who do not respond to medication treatment, there are advanced treatment like surgery which includes stimulation and insertion of a pacemaker and this pacemaker does not include opening of the brain but it is just a device to monitor the functioning of the brain and heart to monitor functioning of other organs” said Dr. Balakrishnan at the Bethany Hospital here in Shillong on Thursday.

Dr. Balakrishnan said that the MIOT hospital Chennai is collaborating with Bethany Hospital Shillong and will meet the officials from the State health department to work out means and ways in which proper infrastructure and experts can be availed for treatment of neurodegenerative disorder in Meghalaya itself as the state still lacks infrastructure for treatment of neurodegenerative disorder.

When asked for the cost of such treatment, Dr. Hrishikesh Sarkar, Director of Neurosurgery, said that the cost is preceeded by cost for pre-operative workout or surgical pre-op, pre-surgical work and depending on the type of epilepsy or on the duration of epilepsy, the actual overall cost can be known.

“It would be about Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 80,000 to finish basic work up to identify whether a patient would benefit from surgery and after proper examining the patients an actual cost can be determine but for major surgery it would cost around Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 7 lakhs,” he informed.
