Chief Minister’s level inter-state border talks ends; Conrad – Himanta expresses commitment to resolve the issue amicably

Shillong, July 23:  The Chief Minister’s level talk on Inter-State border issue between Assam and Meghalaya was held on Friday in Shillong. During the meeting of the two Chief Minister’s in Shillong, they have agreed to go beyond status quo in resolving the border disputes between Assam and Meghalaya.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Meghalaya has made claims of 12 disputed areas along the border with Assam.

He said that claims and counter claims will be discussed thoroughly and solution towards the vexed problem will be resolved as soon as possible.

He also said that the second round of talks will be held in Guwahati on August 6. Sarma has termed the meeting of the two states fruitful and stated that inter-state border issue will be taken up on priority and both the states have made a commitment to resolve the long pending issue.

Meghalaya chief minister has termed talks as ‘historic’

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for agreeing to hold the first meeting on inter-state border dispute in Shillong. He termed the meeting as ‘historic’ as he opined that the visit of Assam Chief Minister to Meghalaya will send a very positive message for both the States.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that delay in resolving the issue has led to problems in the inter-state border area, and there were many instance of violence as well. He said that Assam Chief Minister has shown keen interest in resolving the issue and both the State has agreed to work out an amicable solution.

He said that resolving the issue is not simple and it will require multiple consultations. He said that local issues, history and the factual data will be considered to move forward to find a practical and acceptable solution.

He also said that in the second meeting to be held in Guwahati more factual data will be discussed. He further also said that union home minister Amit Shah is very keen to resolve the inter-state border dispute and both the States are moving ahead in a very positive manner.

“It is in a way historic meeting because Honorable Chief Minister of Assam has come himself to the Secretariat and met us here, which has also sent a very positive message to the people of the State that Assam is very very keen to see that we find the solution to this very very long pending issue that we have” Mr.Sangma added.
