Shillong, Feb 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday attended the Meghalaya State Ex-Servicemen Rally held at Assam Regimental Centre, Happy Valley, Shillong.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by the Minister, GAD, Government of Meghalaya, Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The Chief Minister, during his address, said that the Ex-Servicemen Rally is an important platform that focuses on renewing the bond between serving and retired personnel, for addressing grievances for the welfare of ex-servicemen and for the felicitation of Veer Naris. He also lauded the contribution of the veterans and the serving soldiers of Meghalaya and the North-East, towards the security and prosperity of the country.
During the occasion the Chief Minister announced several initiatives taken by the Government of Meghalaya for the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families. He further added that the Government is committed to ensure maximum support and benefit is given to the ex-servicemen and the Veer Naris.
In addition to the various initiatives announced, the Chief Minister informed that sufficient space will be provided for the ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme) Polyclinic in Tura. The Government has also sanctioned 4 Crores for the construction of the Sainik Rest House in Shillong, the work for which will start at the earliest, he informed. The Sainik Rest House will also accommodate the office of the Director of Sainik Welfare.
He announced that the State Government will enhance the cash award for Param Vir Chakra awardees from the existing Rs. 1 Lakh to Rs. 5 Lakhs and also decided to enhance the Annuity to Param Vir Chakra Award awardee from Rs. 1,000 per month to Rs. 10,000 per month . He further announced that the ex-gratia to the next of kin of martyrs & disabled soldiers will be enhanced from Rs. 15 Lakhs to Rs. 20 Lakhs by GoM and House tax to Ex-servicemen/widows residing in Meghalaya including the Municipal areas will also be exempted

During the occasion the Chief Minister also presented the ex-gratia and gallantry award winners cheques and gifts to selected ex-servicemen and Veer Naris.

The event was attended by around 1200 retired Defence Personnel and family members of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the motherland.Air Marshal AP Singh, AVSM, SASO Eastern Air Command, Lt. Gen. K.C Panchanathan, AVSM, GOC 101 Area, Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills District, Isawanda Laloo, were among the dignitaries present at the function on Tuesday.
