Shillong, Aug 23: The State government is ready to earn some revenue after tendering the ground floor of the Meghalaya House, Kolkata, which was lying unutilized for the past 15 years.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “I am happy this (tendering) has been done now and finally we are going to start getting some revenue out of this location which will obviously benefit the State.”
His statement came after the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) had recently demanded the State government to terminate the contract given to Dy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar’s brother Rocky Dhar in regards to the allotment of the ground floor of the Meghalaya House, Kolkata for business purposes.
Urging everybody to do their homework in everything that they say, Sangma said that almost for the last 15 years, this particular property after being constructed has been lying unutilized.
“You’re talking of loss of crores of revenue for the State government. It’s a beautiful asset which should have been tendered out a long time back,” he said.
The chief minister also informed that the matter was also taken up for discussion in the last term.
“We took up the matter and we decided that we must go ahead with this because I had visited and I saw the hall just lying empty, I saw the tourism counter just being there and not being that productive. The agriculture counter is there and not much activities going on. This is in the heart of Kolkata and hence, the overall revenue generation that we lost was quite sad,” he said while adding “Hence, we decided that we should immediately tender the place out and through tendering process, ask everybody to come in and whoever gives the highest amount it was decided that it should be given (to them).”
He said in that process, the place was allotted to the highest bidder.
“The highest bidder has got it. The highest bidder happens to be individual A or B, that is not something that I can comment on but the point is that the procedures and the process has been followed and the person, who has given the highest revenue has been given (the contract),” Sangma added further.
