Shillong, Feb 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday met the Home Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) at New Delhi to apprise the Centre and discuss on the ‘unconditional’ peace talks offered by the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

Informing about the meeting through a video message, Sangma said the meeting was very positive and the steps to take the peace talks forward were discussed in detail. He said more development will take place regarding this in the coming days.
“It was regarding (meeting with MHA) the communication we have received from the HNLC where they have expressed their desire to have talks with both government of India and government of Meghalaya in the interest of overall peace in the state and they have mentioned in the letter that they are coming forward unconditionally as well as to discuss within the parameters of the Constitution of India. It’s a welcome step and we have updated the Government of India (MHA) on these developments and detailed discussion on how to take this forward have also been discussed… it was a very positive meeting,” he said.
“We will take the steps forward as per discussions with the MHA and in the next few days more developments will take place,” he added.
Notably, Meghalaya government on February 9 announced that it has received a formal letter from the proscribed militant group, HNLC offering to hold unconditional talks with the Government of India.
