Shillong, Mar 16: National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday expressed confidence that the party will get more than 30 seats in the upcoming 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections.
Addressing a meeting to welcome former minister Nehlang Lyngdoh to NPP, Sangma said, “I am sure with the kind of support we are getting from each and every one the NPP will come out victorious in the coming election and we will get more than 30 seats in this coming election in 2023.”

Stating that it has been very challenging for the party, Sangma said, “But we are committed to the people of the state. Yes we have faced challenges and difficulties but we have always kept our spirit high and we have always ensured that we always keep the interest of the state in front of us, we have always ensure that we listen to people whether it is political leaders, public, civil society – this government and the party has been somebody that always believes in listening to the people and that is the reason why today so many people are coming forward and supporting the NPP and strengthen the party so that we can come out victorious in the next election.”
Terming the joining of Nehlang as a very important milestone, Sangma said the senior leader has been an MLA twice and a person who has always worked for the grass root, adding “It is a great reflection of the trust that these leaders and their people and their followers, today has on the NPP. I believe that they see the NPP as a party that will take the state forward, is taking the state forward and will continue to take the state forward in the future also.”
The NPP national president also assured to work together with the leader and his people in all the works that the party is doing.
Also stating that the state government has been working tirelessly on many issues for the last four years, Sangma said issues like border and coal mining, where mining was banned by the NGT and the past government did not take any steps to go ahead and lift the ban or go for scientific mining.
“Today not only has the ban been lifted but we are very close to even starting scientific mining. We have 17 applicants who have filed for prospecting licenses and they have been given the prospecting licenses and now the exploration is going on,” he said.
“I am very sure at the pace which things are moving may not be all the 17 in one go but we will see few of things will be able to get their mining leases and also get their mining plans approved and are able to start scientific mining in the state in a very short period of time,” Sangma added.
