Counter-insurgency operations underway in Manipur after major unrest

Must read

Imphal, May 29: Escalating violence has once again gripped Manipur with reports of firing on civilians, clashes between militant groups and security forces, and widespread civil unrest in the Imphal valley.

Government sources confirmed that at least five individuals, including a policeman, lost their lives, while 12 others sustained injuries during the recent outbreak of violence.

Despite the imposition of curfew measures, people took to the streets in defiance on Sunday night, leading to confrontations with security forces. In response, tear gas and blank firing were employed to restore order, as disclosed by sources on the ground.

According to Manipur’s Chief Minister, security forces have successfully neutralised approximately 40 terrorists armed with automatic weapons over the past four days in a coordinated operation.

In light of the persistent turmoil, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has scheduled a visit to Manipur, which is set to commence on Monday and extend until June 1st. His visit aims to facilitate the central government’s engagement with all stakeholders and work towards establishing peace in the region.

The recent wave of violence in Manipur was triggered by ethnic clashes that began on May 3. The clashes were sparked by a tribal solidarity march held in the hill districts, protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Tragically, these clashes have already claimed the lives of at least 80 individuals. Additionally, the region has experienced a 25-day-long internet shutdown and remains under curfew.

Further intensifying concerns, the Indian Army recently intercepted messages indicating a plot by militants to use human shields during the ongoing riots. These developments have heightened the urgency for swift action to prevent further loss of life and maintain stability in Manipur.
