Shillong, June 10: After a lull of few days the COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya have suddenly jumped on Thursday with 603 new cases detected in last 24 hours.

The state had detected 448 cases on Wednesday, 379 on Tuesday and 438 on Monday. The jump in cases is over 150 in a day. This has taken the total number of cases past the 40,000 mark to 40,586. At the same time, the total deaths have also breached the 700 mark with 10 new deaths on Thursday, taking the total to 704.

However, the state is seeing strong surge in recoveries. Although Thursday saw 427 recoveries, Wednesday saw 507, Tuesday had 773 recoveries which was more than double of the caseload of the day, and Monday had 689 recoveries.

The current active cases in the state stand at 5,015 with 34,867 total recoveries till date.

The worrisome trend is that more and more cases are coming from the rural and sub-urban areas in comparison to earlier trends while the curve is flattening in urban areas. For instance, East Khasi Hills has been accounting for highest daily caseload since the beginning of the pandemic but its current cases seem to be saturating around 200, whereas other areas are showing rising numbers slowly.

East Khasi Hills detected 226 cases on Thursday, 152 on Wednesday, 149 on Tuesday and 206 on Monday. In comparison, South West Khasi Hills detected 62 cases on Thursday, 27 – Wednesday, 23 – Tuesday, 5 on Monday. West Jaintia Hills reported 74 cases on Thursday, 17 – Wednesday, 40 – Tuesday, and 115 on Monday.

Similarly, cases are rising at quite an alarming rate in Garo Hills. West Garo Hills reported 63 cases on Thursday, 69 on Wednesday, 52 on Tuesday and 15 on Monday. North Garo Hills reported 28 cases on Thursday, 40 on Wednesday, 36 on Tuesday and 03 on Monday. East Garo Hills reported 29 cases on Thursday, 27 on Wednesday, 15 on Tuesday and 06 on Monday.
