Cyclone Remal : One dead, many injured, multiple landslides reported in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 28: Cyclone Remal has severely impacted the Northeast, including the entire state of Meghalaya, resulting in one fatality, multiple injuries, numerous landslides, and flood-like situations in many areas of the state.

A tragic incident occurred in Sutnga Weilong, where a house wall collapsed, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old man and injuring two others.

Another landslide at Mawkynroh Bypass at around 4:00 AM in the morning left four people injured, all of whom have been shifted to NEIGRIHMS hospital for treatment.

The cyclone’s heavy rains and strong winds have also damaged several households in Nonglang, Rangmaw, Lad-dommawiong, Sohdyniang, and Diwian Mawiong, causing road blockages in several areas.

Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to clear the debris and assist affected communities.

A mudslide was also reported on the Guwahati-Shillong National Highway. However, swift action by Nongpoh PS personnel and NHAI authorities cleared the debris from NH 06, allowing vehicle traffic to resume smoothly.

In Eastern West Khasi Hills, the water level of the Kynshi River has risen drastically, creating a flood-like situation affecting the village along the river, flooding houses and disrupting transportation.

In Garo Hills, a landslide was reported in Babupura. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, only property damage. In New Tura, a fallen tree temporarily blocked vehicle traffic for a few hours, but swift action by the concerned department cleared the blockage, and traffic is now flowing smoothly.

The district administration is on high alert, and the Deputy Chief Minister has also announced that the government is prepared to handle Cyclone Remal. Additionally, they have allocated ₹20 crore for each district to manage any casualties.
