Dibrugarh, Nov 30: In a unique gesture, social worker Sudhir Kejriwal of Dibrugarh organised the wedding of 21 couples through Vedic rituals on Saturday, coinciding with his daughter’s marriage.
The mass wedding took place at Shree Agrasen Milan Mandir and was inaugurated by Dibrugarh Mayor Dr. Saikat Patra, who lit a ceremonial lamp before Lord Ganesh’s idol.
Sudhir Kejriwal shared that the idea emerged a year ago when his daughter’s wedding was planned. “While some can afford lavish weddings, many couples miss out on formal ceremonies due to financial hardships. I’m proud to contribute to such a meaningful event,” he said.
The event was organised in collaboration with the North Assam provincial committee of Dharm Jagran Samanvay, which performed the rituals for 21 Adivasi couples.
Rachana Jain, the event coordinator, highlighted that this was the first mass wedding in Dibrugarh initiated by a father to commemorate his daughter’s marriage.
Yogesh Shastri, head of Dharm Jagran Samanvay North Assam Province, explained the significance of such events. “Many financially disadvantaged youth, particularly from tribal communities, enter into informal matrimonial relationships. Without formal weddings, they remain excluded from social and religious practices. Mass weddings help integrate them into society,” he said, adding that the organisation has facilitated over 17,000 such marriages in the past five years.
The event saw attendance from prominent figures across various sections of society, making it a memorable and impactful occasion.
