TURA, Nov 14: A three day medical camp taking place from today at the Sub-Divisional hospital In Jengjal, run by the Adventist Mission Hospital Society, with specialist doctors from India’s most famous Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore and Penang Adventist Hospital of Malaysia has been witnessing a large number of patients from different parts of Garo Hills coming to avail the services.
A special free health check up and counselling camp is also being organised at the SMELC auditorium in Dakopgre tura, where medical teams are providing free screening of patients for sugar, blood pressure, heart and lung assessment, body mass index and health age calculation.
Since early Monday morning, patients have been streaming in to the Jengjal hospital and surgeons began their first operations shortly after 6:30 AM.
“There has been an overwhelming response to the medical and health camp and we are having registrations beyond our expectations. The surgery department has been house full on the first day itself and we are expecting bigger numbers tomorrow,” says Dr Denyl, lead doctor at Jengjal Adventist hospital.
“Today (Monday) we conducted surgeries for hernia, appendicitis and gall bladder. Patients from far flung areas like Baghmara, Dadenggre, North Garo Hills and even the border areas have come seeking treatment. Tomorrow surgeries will extend for haemorrhoids and other cases,” added Dr Denyl.
In view of the large turnout of patients seeking surgeries, the paediatric ward has been converted into a post operation room for patients.
There are two surgeons from Malaysia who have joined the group in conducting the health camp bringing the total number of doctors to 7. They are backed up by a group of medical students from CMC Vellore.
In the Health Camp at SMELC, Dakopgre Tura, any patient in need of more comprehensive medical care or surgery are screened and sent to Jengjal where the operations take place.
The Jengjal hospital of the government managed by the Adventist Mission hospital society is now deemed one of the best for mother and child care with as many as three child specialists and a gynaecologist, all from CMC Vellore, permanently stationed in the hospital.
Meghalaya Health Minister James Pangsang K Sangma is scheduled to visit Jengjal hospital and meet with the visiting medical team on Wednesday, the final day of the three day camp
