Doctors remove safety pin from 9-month infant’s throat

Jowai, June 26: Undertaking a daunting mission, doctors in Jowai, West Jaintia Hills were able to safely remove an “open safety pin” stuck inside the throat of a nine-month-old baby on Tuesday.

The parents from East Jaiñtia Hills district, rushed the baby to the Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai at about 12.00 pm. Immediately, the doctors conducted an X-ray and found the safety pin stuck inside the throat.

“We conducted an X-ray and found the safety pin stuck inside the throat. We found that the pin was open and that is very dangerous,” Dr. Benne-Lee Lyngkhoi, Ear Nose and Throat specialist at the hospital, said.

The baby was rushed to the Operation Theatre and the hospital’s doctors, together with the anaesthetic team, readied for the operation in less than an hour. The team of doctors and anaesthetics were able to safely remove the safety pin after conducting the challenging medical procedure.
