Shillong, July 13: The President of the Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) Bipul Thangkhiew on Tuesday, while giving his speech in the farewell program of the president of FKJGP, Wellbirth Rani and the oath taking ceremony of the new members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) held at U Soso Tham auditorium, Shillong said that Dr. Mukul Sangma has betrayed them.
Thangkhiew said that the government of Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) under the leadership of Dr. Mukul Sangma betrayed the pressure groups in the year of 2012-2013 when they demanded Inner Line Permit (ILP) during those years.
“The protest for ILP was most rigorous in the year 2012, at the time of the MUA government led by Dr Mukul Sangma. The protest lasted for a span of 6 months. There were 13 pressure groups that came together to pressurise the MUA government to formulate the ILP in every region of our state and have strict control over the massive entering of non-tribals in the region” Thangkhiew said.
He further stated that “instead of granting the ILP Dr. Mukul Sangma called for a talk to intervene and requested the pressure groups to call off the protest for ILP an allow the MLA elections of 2013 to run smoothly and at the same time he promised the protestors that after the MLA elections of 2013, the new government will work on formulating the ILP in the state.”
Thangkhiew further informed that within 5 months of the new government being formed that is Meghalaya United Alliance-II (MUA-II), Dr. Mukul called then to discuss in depth for the demand to formulate the ILP in the state.
“However it was shocking to see that Dr. Mukul Sangma instead took out the election manifesto of the party and said that the demand for ILP was never mentioned in the agenda of work, this angered all the pressure groups.”
This lie and betrayal of Dr. Mukul Sangma made all the pressure groups take a unanimous decision of not letting the Congress make government in the MDC elections.
It was this betrayal that paved a way for the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, Thangkhiew added.
It can be seen that Dr. Mukul Sangma and 11 other MLAs from Congress Party has now joined hands with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) to contest in the coming MLA 2023 in the state.
