Shillong, Jan 18: The Government of Meghalaya is kicking off 2024 with an evening market at Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok) in Shillong. The market is scheduled to open Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on January 19 and run through March 31.
This project is an initiative of the Meghalaya Tourism Department and will be implemented by Meghalayan Age Ltd.
Attendees will have the chance to interact with a wide variety of entrepreneurs Over the course of three months, owing to the the evening market’s rotating lineup of vendors.
In addition to the market experience, there will be curated experiences and art and photography exhibitions that highlight the state’s range of talent.
In addition to indigenous food and wine stalls, the evening market will serve as a hub for trade and commerce, featuring a farmer’s market offering organic produce, processed agro products like spices, pickles, and beverages, as well as crafts stalls selling handmade goods.
The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), which is known for uncovering talented performers from the state, will provide musical performances each evening, creating a lively atmosphere.
While the stalls and activities are designed to engage and entertain visitors, the market’s true value is in giving a platform for showcasing and supporting local entrepreneurs, artisans, farmers, and artists.
It aims to provide an enjoyable escape from commercial monotony by allowing tourists to support local businesses while enjoying the serene setting of the lake in the center of the city.
The the evening market is open to everyone, and tickets are available for Rs. 100 per person at Ward’s Lake Gates 2 and 3. Children under the age of ten can enter for free, and there will be an area for kids to play.
The earnings from each week’s ticket sales will be donated to noteworthy organisations & institutions.
