Tura, April 27: The new strain and latest wave of the Covid 19 coronavirus infections sweeping Garo hills has claimed its first victim in recent months with 26-year-old male Sahip A Sangma of Kharukol Jalaigre village in South Garo Hills passing away at Tura civil hospital on Monday night.
The victim was brought in a serious condition from Baghmara hospital on Monday evening at around 5:20 PM to Tura civil hospital and during tests was found positive with the covid infection. Four hours later he passed away from Covid 19 pneumonia with chronic pulmonary infection.
On the same day an auto-rickshaw driver along with his wife and 9-month-old baby daughter also tested positive for Covid-19 in Baghmara civil hospital when they went for a routine screening, informed officials.
“This is the first time we have detected Covid-19 in a baby and this is very alarming and worrisome. The new spike in infections is attacking the younger generation in a big way,” confirmed health officials from Garo Hills.
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills DC Ram Singh informed the media on Tuesday night that 11 new positive cases were detected on Tuesday bringing the total number of active cases to rise to 60. Almost all positive cases detected had either a history of travel or belonged to a returnee.
Similarly, even in Ampati region of south West Garo Hills district, Deputy commissioner Ram Krishna Chitturi confirmed that two new positive cases were detected and they were both returnees from other states.
