Floods devastate Garo Hills update: 4 dead, NH-62 disrupted, bridges washed away

Tura, June 17: The incessant rains for the past few days have devastated the Garo Hills region, particularly the South Garo Hills. At least four people have been reported dead in flash flood and landslide while major bridges have been washed away and the all important NH-62 cut off due to landslides.

Sources informed that a house was hit by flash flood in Bolsalgre locality of Baghmara, in which three people were staying on rent. Their bodies have been recovered.

The deceased have been identified as Tengkam A Sangma (31), Gamchia Ch. Sangma (20 years), and Yangkim Ch. Sangma (4 years)

Meanwhile, one more death has been reported due to landslide in Siju, South Garo Hills. The victim has been ifedntifed as Kasinchi R. Marak W/o Tengan M. Sangma of Siju Rongbokgittim .


Meanwhile, NH-62 has been disrupted with landslides and flash flood caused water logging in different parts of the district. In Baghmara town, flood water had reached different localities.

Reportedly, atleast two major Bridge at Karukol and Rongdik have been washed away. Rongara Main Bridge and Mahadeo Suspension Bridge has been washed away.

Meanwhile, the Simsang River was also flowing above danger in Baghmara, South Garo Hills and Williamnagar in East Garo Hills and has inundated nearby areas. Landslides have been reported in different parts of the district. No casualty reported so far.
