Tura, Dec 1: The State Cancer Society of Meghalaya, in partnership with Civil Hospital, Tura, and NP-NCD, West Garo Hills, conducted a Cancer Awareness Program and Free Cancer Screening Camp on Friday at Civil Hospital, Tura. The camp’s theme emphasised the importance of early detection with the slogan ‘Early Detection is a Better Choice.
At 10:30 am, the program commenced under the leadership of Dr. Inbert Ch Marak, Joint Director cum Superintendent of Tura Civil Hospital.
The event was graced by officials from Shillong, including Dr. Anisha Mawlong, Head of the Cancer Wing (Oncologist) at Shillong Civil Hospital; Dr. Farida Momin, Oncologist at Shillong Civil Hospital; and Dr. J. C. Lamin, Oncologist at Shillong Civil Hospital. Representing the Tura team were Dr. Inbert Ch Marak, Joint Director Cum Superintendent of Tura Civil Hospital; Dr. Seminda K Marak, Joint Director cum Superintendent of MCH Hospital; and Dr. Jakrambel A Sangma, Additional DM&HO of West Garo Hills, Tura.
The conducted camp offered free cancer screening services, covering basic medications such as pain relievers and multivitamins at no cost. Primarily focusing on oral screening, the camp provided an avenue for patients showing potential signs of cancer. If such indications were found, the Tura Civil Hospital was equipped to carry out chemotherapy and basic surgeries. However, cases demanding radiation therapy were to be referred to Shillong for specialised treatment.
