Govt constitutes judicial probe into the killing of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew

Shillong, Aug 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday said that judicial probe will be constituted to probe into the killing of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, who was killed during police raid on August 13 in Shillong.

In 2018, Thangkhiew, ex-HNLC militant had surrendered before the authorities.

His killing has led to widespread repercussion and during his funeral yesterday, public had paraded the streets of Mawlai in Shillong with black flags. Also, law and order situation turned volatile with alleged miscreants snatching police arms and setting the police vehicle on fire.

An urgent cabinet meeting was held this afternoon in Shillong, wherein decision to constitute judicial probe was taken, apart from constituting peace committee to be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong including cabinet minister Hamletson Dohling and Renikton Lyngdoh.

Chief Minister informed that the peace committee will co-opt for members from different civil societies and other stakeholders.

He also informed that the curfew will continue till Wednesday (Aug 18) 5 am, and the ban on internet will continue for next 24 hours.

On resignation of Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the Chief Minister said that he is examining the matter.

He also informed that a sub-committee for security and law and order is being formed to be headed by Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister.
