Shillong, Oct 6: The Meghalaya Government Lower Primary School Contractual Teachers’ Association (MGLPSCTA), after their month-long agitation, on Thursday stormed into the Main Secretariat Building at Shillong along with their family members.
The teachers decided to retaliate and to march towards Secretariat Building even as Section 144 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, is in force around the Secretariat area.
Mentionably, the teachers have been agitating at Civil Hospital junction since September 7.
In response and to disperse the crowd, the security personnel had to fire several rounds of tear gas, despite the presence of women and children. However, there were no female police personnel to manage the chaos and only the male personnel were deployed to manage the situation.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Ïohmon Syiem has taken the statements of the children and the female teachers affected by the tear gas incident.
One of the Magistrates stated that the Chief Secretary had called the agitating teachers for a meeting at 5 PM but the teachers have refused to meet the government officials and to continue with their agitation.
The teachers said they will not move from this place until they get assurance from the government on reinstating their jobs.
