Govt to examine amnesty for HNLC’s leaders & cadres: Conrad

Must read

Shillong, July 20: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that the government will examine the demand of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for amnesty.

Addressing the media, Sangma said, “Whatever is possible within the frameworks that are there, we will definitely examine all possibilities to see how much we are going to accommodate but, as I said, there are concerns, there are constraints and there will be challenges.”

He said, “It is not just the state government (which has to take a call on this). You have to realise it is a discussion where the Ministry of Home Affairs is also involved in it. So, we have to take them into consideration. As I said, what is important is we are going into this with a very open mind, we are going into this to find a solution to it. We are all in that mind-set that we should find a solution to it.”

“But let me be very clear, from the Meghalaya government side we are very determined to move forward in this, we are taking all possible steps and whatever concerns that are there we will do our best to address those concerns along with the HNLC and the government of India, the MHA,” Sangma assured.

The HNLC had recently sought dropping of all criminal cases registered against its leaders and cadres while asserting that amnesty is needed to take the peace process forward.

The outfit had conveyed its demand during the first round of peace talks held with the Centre and State government on June 24.
