SHILLONG, Nov 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said necessary steps will be taken to comply with the instructions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) pertaining to transfer and posting of officers before the upcoming 2023 polls.

“As per notification given by the ECI we will be taking necessary steps to follow the instructions,” Sangma told reporters.

Stating it is a normal process that takes place before every election, Sangma however said, “There is nothing out of the blue in every election, this notification goes to every state and it is a normal procedure which has to be followed before the election.”

When asked, the chief minister said that there is no issue that has come to indicate that the state would want an early election.

“In fact elections are just round the corner unless you don’t want to celebrate Christmas. That is a different issue but I think the normal process will be followed and we will wait for notification from ECI,” he added.

A letter issued by the ECI senior principal secretary Narendra N Butolia on November 4 said, “The commission has further directed that transfer/posting of all officers covered under the above instructions shall be done and compliance reports by Chief Secretary and DGP with details of action obtained from the concerned departments/offices of state government shall be furnished to the commission by December 15.”
