Shillong, Nov 30: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) on Wednesday strongly condemned the CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang, for calling the Khasi settlers at Mukroh Village “illegal settlers”.

Talking to the media, Tyllang Thongni, the Vice President of HANM, stated that the statement made by the CEM can be regarded as something which will create disparity between the Karbi and the Meghalaya citizens.

“The different pressure groups, political leaders of the State, NGOs and even religious groups have stated from the start that this issue is an inter-state dispute between the Government of Meghalaya and Assam and therefore it should not create any differences between any community. However, the CEM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang, with his statement of calling the Khasi settlers of the Village “illegal settlers” will create a sense of difference between the Khasi and Karbi communities,” stated Thongni.

He further stated that if the Assam government pushes the HANM they will not hesitate to replicate the incident of 2010 at Umtna which made the Police of Assam surrender to the HANM.

John Sangma, Chief Advisor of HANM, Ranikor Circle, also stated that political parties should work together and not play politics in order to attain peace with regards to border issues. He stated, “I request the government of Meghalaya to please work on how to bring peace, normalcy in the border areas under one umbrella to fight and bring justice to the people staying in the border areas”.

He also suggested stationing SWAT, SOT, SF-10 in border areas so that people of the border area will get some protection.
